what is the problem, I am or used to be an electronics engineer and I have a '98 storm I can use to do comparison checks to yours. You dont need a new harness, just find the fault. It could take a while but it is fixable. Dave

I keep burning out the yellow wires to the reg rec the stator from what i remember was fine (got it tested) It goes fine charges at 13.8 to 14volts after replacement then after a while it starts to drop and sure enough the wires are burning out again the only thing else i can think of is the reconnection of the wiring when i put the new connector on im joining with joiners and sealing them Most times they are burning out around the join but other times there not so i just dont know any ideas help or smack up the back of the head appreciated

Are all 3 of the wires burning out at the same time?
How did the fault first present itself?

It is probably your Regulator /rectifier remove the tail plastics, it is on the rhs you will see the 3 yellow wires, and 1 earth and 1 live plugged into a small plastic box. Just to confirm it's not the wiring, extend your joins all the way up to the RR direct with 3 new HD wires, use shrouded spade connectors straight into the rr, you will have to extend + & - as well.
Run the bike and put high beam on to load the system up and monitor the new wires if good make them permenant if getting hot get a new RR

Ebay is flooded with cheap nasty ones. I woud go to your local bike wreckeres (or ring them) and get any late model RR off a 1000cc+ Jap bike. Tons of low k's stat write offs now. That way you get top quality oem part for lass $ I think genuine new are $180ish. Even if the plug is wrong you know your way around now...3 yellow wires + & - If you are at the wreckers cut the loom with the plug still on it at least 100mm then solder it to your loom. Make sure the rr has good contact with the subframe as it needs to dissapate heat. Dave

ok so got a genuine reg rec and installed it but now its starting at 12.8 and goes up to 13.2 when at 3500rpm stays at 12.8 at idle then goes and sits at 12.5 to 12.6 wires arent hot and reg is no way near hot just warm checked at the back of the connecter and it reads 13.4 on the + and - but at the battery its 12.5 to 12.6 so any ideas all i can think is there might be a break in the wiring harness or bad connection between the terminals etc
the reg is brand new $160

home.usit.net/~johng1/VTR1000F-wiring.jpgCheck this out, I bet it is the main fuse connections corroded, clean it up and squirt some WD40 or Inox in there. If no good replace the red/white wire, from the RR to the main fuse. If you have 13.4 at the RR it should be at the battery as well. Almost there. Dave ;D
