Okay, so The KILRV Build has inspired me to post a build thread for the mods I have been working on for the last year or so . . . well to be honest I started design in 2006 (it says so on the folder of notes I have). Anyways here is a start to the thread for those who are curious . . . Here is my basic mock up drawing of desired outcome . . . Plan is to run a single exhaust pipe up in front of the Swingarm, then split into 2 again to go into the cans. I even did a cardboard model to see if everything would fit. A couple images of the First Subframe I made - it turned out to be a bit narrow for the battery I wanted to use, so I had to start again - measure twice cut once . . . Testing how the exhausts might sit . . . FYI they are 2004 R1 OEM Cans that have been debaffled (45mm straight through) More to come soon . . . .

Are you going to finish those welds? Nah - I thought I'd just paint over them to save time That's alright isn't it? I mean if you can't see it it doesn't matter . . . . .

It was at about this time that the battery I ordered arrived. I got a POS Chinese AGM for $100 - dunno about the quality yet, but this project is on a budget. At this point I realised that the hole for the battery was about 5 mm too small for the one that arrived. Apparently my cardboard model was a bit dodgy. So I had 3 options; a. Start again. b. Modify the frame I'd made and hope for the best. c. Something in between. I went for c. as it looked like the easiest and quickest solution and after a bit of mucking about and a lot of cursing this is what I ended up with. Sorry - no progress shots. The sides will be filled with a lightweight sheet I have - it is fibreglass baked under pressure and pretty tough.

Had to make some decisions about 'prettiness' early in the process so I didn't end up with a box and nothing attractive . . . . I figured a cowl off something else, hacked up to fit would be the way to go and therefore eBay became my friend. Ended up with a cowl off a VFR750 and modded it as follows; Initially I was gonna just put the key latch from the original set up in it, but that was a bit meh . . . . so worked on a remote latch instead. The Button will go just above the LED Tail Light, off centre next to a reflector.

The remote release sounds good, but what happens if you get a flat battery?

The remote release sounds good, but what happens if you get a flat battery? That's a good point. The seat I am using is off a 2001 R1 and is screwed/bolted on. This gives me access to the battery - the cowl covers the electrics etc. I have been thinking of another 'Fail Safe' too, but haven't got to it yet.

Would an over-ride,small cable attatched to where the servo are goes work?

Johnno88 Possibly - with the end where it could be got at from near the battery. Or a small hole to poke a rod in that can push the latch . . . The servo is a 10KG unit from a 1/5 Scale R/C Car so it's not likely to fail - most likely, as snowcone points out, simple battery failure.

So with the frame done the next step was to get the exhaust done. This meant putting it all together and stuffing all the wiring in as best I can - the finally build will see the wiring modded/cut/changed to be neater. Having got this much done myself, I should have known better, but I actually went to an exhaust place to get the extra bits I need sorted out, thinking they'd do a better job than myself. After a couple of conversations where I was very clear about what I wanted and what my intentions were, this is what I got . . . Doesn't look too bad . . . that is until I went to take it off (as I told the guy I would be doing) and found that firstly I had to cut it to get it off - not real happy about that and then I see this . . . Yep they used bog to cover their shitty welding. NO FARKIN' HAPPY!! Anyways, lesson learned, and I will be using a bit of what they did, and redoing it myself, along with having the swingarm modded to allow for a larger up pipe. BTW - it sounded Awesome, quite Ducatiesque minus the 'I'm about to fall apart rattle' that Ducati's have. I liked it anyway. Will have to be tuned a bit as it felt a bit sluggish down low . . .

Well that looks like it will flow nicely Another graduate from the Steady Eddie School of Welding Put some lube on the end of it and give it back to them - figuratively

Been doing some thinking . . . yes it hurts. About all I've had time for with the move and all, but I do have another swing arm to modify for the exhaust routing. Have had brief thoughts of modifying the subframe further too . . . we shall see.
Is it a race? If so I'd better pull my finger out!
Oh and I have put a couple coats of spray putty on my 'new' front lower cowl - gonna paint it to match the rest of the bike rather than silver.

So I have actually done something on this project this week. The weekend was taken up with a Workshop/shed rethink and tidy - everything has a place now and it's not on the the floor :-) Anyway, so the swing arm mod is next so I can then do the exhaust myself. Have measured up where I need to chunk to be taken out and by how much . . . The exhaust pipe coming up the middle will be pretty tight . . . but I think it will work okay. There is plenty of thickness in the bit I'm having put back, so if a little 'remodeling' is needed there will still be some wall thickness left. Off to a welding joint tomorrow to see if they will do it before I cut a big hole - could end in tears like the friggin' zorst last time

Cutting a hole in the swingarm seems easy enough - even when you say it out loud, but in practice is a different story. Firstly it's pretty awkward to get at and secondly the walls are about 5 mm thick. I started by drilling some very evenly spaced holes along the curved line . . . . Then it was out with the Hacksaw, Dremel, and various drill bits . . . In the end it had to come off in 3 pieces as there is bracing just above the Pro-Link mount . . . . Next I need to shape the hole so my piece of pipe fits snug, and also cut a piece of thick aluminum bar to brace the inside of the cavity. Once that is done I'll go back to the welding place who were most helpful and get them to sort it out along with the deck for my Grandma's Victa . . .

WOW! grandma must have a big Victa! I tried to get some sliding doors and a small verandah on mine, but the architect reckons the council would knock it back because it exceeds the floor space ratio. Good luck with the deck!

Well I got council approval for the deck on the mower and now it and the swingarm are back from the shop.
Job looks good - all I have to do now is clean them up and prep for paint . . . . do they still make Victa Green Hammertone? For the mower although the 'Storm might look nice with a green highlight . . . . Will post pics later when I have more than 1 to put up and there is something exciting to look at.
