Ill be interested to see if you think it makes the handling a lot better , did you have heavier springs and a firk brace before , sorry if I've missed earlier comment on this .

I did have heavier springs and a Coerce Fork Brace and played with the oil . It was a vast improvement over stock. Also had F4i calipers, braided lines and EBC HH pads. The current set up is like the difference between the Starship Enterprise and a Boeing 747. There is no comparison, handles better, brakes better, rides better, looks better. It's like having a new bike and worth the effort and $. The biggest difference is how the bike feels lent over through a corner and the fact that you can apply the power much earlier and the brakes much later. My riding buddies are viewing the tail of my bike a lot more these days ! Like all major mods this one has totally changed the bike however it now puts the back shock under the spotlight. I want a better shock although I can live with it for the moment. I have noticed that I now have almost no Chicken Strips on the back tyre wich is testimony to the improvements in handling and how the new front end inspires much more confidence.

Well,
The big test is coming. Going on a ride with a couple of old school mates. One is on a Guzzi and the other on a gixer 750.
About 1k is on the agenda,, down the coast from Nowra to Merimbula, overnight on the piss then up over the hills to the "Cold Country With Lots Of Bends " then onto Canberra and hopefully home via Nerriga.
This should give me a chance to set the suspension up to a happy medium.
Leaving Saturday morning at 9 !
Pics of course.

Almost a week late,
The ride was fun, even ran out of fuel, new front allows to push harder and got caught out!
Front is still on original settings, might play a bit on the next outing but it is so superior that I have no complaints.
I can't believe the difference.

Well,
Nearly Christmas now and loving the front end.
Everything worked out in the end and the change in the bike is phenomenal, places where It got twitchy are now ridden over without any drama.
It has improved the bike to the point where my riding buddies are commenting on how well she goes.
It's not the power as it is the same except for my over bored shotgun headers and Micron cans ( That's another story )
Now like all things that you do to these bikes , one change Leeds to another.
On that note my Jamie Daugherty Rear shock turned up yesterday and I am about to fit it.
I almost pushed the button on an Ohlins . After researching and feedback I decided to go with the Dmr shock.
It is a modded and reworked CBR 600 shock with much more adjustability and has extra length so the rear shim is not required.
Also has an Eibach Spring fitted to match my weight.
I will post pics as I go.
If this shock is as good as they say and makes an improvement to the rear end as big as the USD conversion I will be one happy camper.

Gday Ken, did you just tell them your weight when geared up and your riding style and have them mod the f4i shock accordingly? I found that website the other day and am trying to scrounge some money together for a Christmas present for myself haha

I got in touch with Jamie at Daugherty Motor Sports ( Speak to him on another forum ) and he sent me a check sheet to fill out. I also advised him of the mods to my bike from a suspension point of view and advised him of my riding style. From what I have seen other people say about his service I decided to go with him. Price was also a consideration. I looked at Ohlins, Way to expensive YSS, roughly same price but less adjustability and unknown to me. Nitron , roughly same price without remote reservoir and much more with. Ikon, No remote reservoir , less adjustability and features. I really would have liked to go with this Aussie company but to get same features as Dmr we are talking Ohlins money. Maxton, Same story as above, to get the same features as Dmr the cost gets out of hand. There were many others I looked at and researched but in the end the Dmr appeared to offer the most bang for your buck! On top of this Jamie from Dmr owns and rides a VTR so is familiar with our bikes. Also spoke to other people who have bought and fitted the Dmr shock and they all agree that it is a great unit that transforms the bike. The final decider was the fact that Mikstr on the Superhawk forum in the States that helped me do the same USD that he has also has one fitted to his bike for a couple of years now and is very happy with it.. I have invested so much time and money into my bike I wanted the best I could get for reasonable money. Every time I looked at another shock I couldn't justify not going with the Dmr. Jamie has done hundreds of these shocks for people all around the world and I have not read anything negative about them. The clincher for me was the fact that he owns a VTR so he understands them. Next step will be an upgrade to the valving and springs on my ZX10 USD front end. Why do I say that ? Because like so many times before, each time I do an upgrade to this bike it highlights another area that has become deficient. All part of the journey ! 6 years now and still going. Here are some pics. imgur.com/gallery/NDjjB

I've had my DMR rear shock on the bike for two months now and I can confirm it is money well spent.

Just went for a short ride aroun my village,
Feels a lot more planted over the rough stuff.
Will go for a longer ride soon and explore the difference.
Tyres are just about shot, new ones to go on next week in preparation for a big ride next weekend.
Happy so far.

WOW !
Big WOW,
Just rode over to Kangaroo Valley, smoked a couple of hotted up Harley's on the 25k hairpin bend, they weren't happy!
The harshness from the rear end is gone, plush with great feedback , I might go up a tad on the rebound.
What a difference and the front still feels good even with shot tyres !
The DMR shock is a value for money mod.
Going on a long trip next Saturday and will take a different route just to explore the shock with new tyres fitted.
I am one very happy camper now !
Thanks Jamie !

Just returned from a 2300klm ride.
Dmr shock new Pirelli 3 tyres .
Stayed at Crescent head and rode the Oxley Highway whilst there. Corner after corner and Nirvana !
The change to the bike and comfort level are unbelievable.
Continued on to Kyogle on some good back roads and enjoyed every bit except for the heat, 40 plus !
Now to figure out what to do next !
Merry Xmas everyone.

Thanks for your post it's been a very interesting, after reading this and others I have decided to do a 954rr front end change, . I am going to do a full fork rebuild and put heavier fork springs in, I also think I'll follow your lead and replace the rear shock with the DMR shock. It looks like the best option considering the price of the Ohlins or Penske shocks.

Lucifer,
I have just returned from a trip down to the Snowy Mountains over some fantastic roads .
The Dmr rear shock is just a revelation.
I couldn't be happier, handles whatever you can throw at it and just transforms the bike.
Not having to worry about being thrown off line allows you to explore the bikes abilities . It handles rough surfaces and makes the back end feel planted.
I was happy before , now I am in awe as to how much of a difference this shock makes to handling and comfort.
I was fully loaded with camping gear and such and it still handled better than before.
Be aware that I have a CBR Fireblade braced swing arm as well so this contributes to the handling as well.
Good luck with your USD conversion, it will be worth it.

Gday Ken,
Is the braced swingarm from a 954? Did you have much trouble installing it? I can’t inagine it’s as easy as a simple swap out. Did it do anything to the ride height? Require a different wheel?
I remember your write up on it (I think?), I’ll have a poke around and see if I can find it.

Hey Steve,
The brace is from a 900 Fireblade . I am about to do another one and it appears that I can buy a 900 swinger for about $170-. I already have the original swing arm from the VTR so cost on this mod with welding etc should be about $300-
If you are down the valley let me know and I will try and meet you.
Just send me a P.M !
Cheers

Could you include some photos of the CBR 900 swingarm modified for the VTR and did you have to change the linkages to suit, would you recommend this modification along with the front end? Is it the sc33 swing arm?

I just stumbled upon this post of mine and must admit that once I replaced the bent fork I was more than happy.
What a great mod and here I am approx 20,000Ks down the track and it just gets better.
Sublime brakes, lotsa feed back from the front and coupled with the DMR rear shock that I fitted it is uber comfortable.
I can't for the life of me understand why Honda didn't fit as standard a USD front end, Hell , I had an FZ1000r in 92 and it had it !
Any way, I strongly recommend a front end conversion of any sort as it completely transforms the bike .
