Hi all While doing research to find a wood fire heater for our house I came across a forum which was discussing the fors & against of getting a wood burning heater & this 1 comment about cleaning the flue had me in stitches
when a teenager and living in farmhouse with a mate we had a open fire,
to clean flue we held a sheet of wood against fire opening and took 3 live chooks up roof in bag,
let them down flue 1 at a time , as they went down flapping their wings and cleaned flue, lol, TRUE STORY
PS No Animals were hurt in this story.

On a serious note, I grew up with wood heaters and actually quite like them. But the chopping of wood gets old after a while and if you have to pay for wood it's not a cheap alternative. And then there is the mess and keeping the little ones away from the burny bits.
Our wall mounted Gas Heater is great - clean and efficient. Even has a timer so it turns itself on to take the chill off the house before I get up. Yep I got soft in my old age . . .
