When we did the last free trade agreement with the US under JH's government we agreed to basically incorporate US copyright laws into Australian laws (a lot of that free trade agreement revolved around the protection of the US media market).
These laws are badly written, either intentionally or otherwise. They are not defining enough and there are lots of ways they can be interpreted. Essentially they give the US the ability to stop websites being viewed in the US, filter search engine results so certain results are not shown, and stop paypal from transferring funds to certain sites. Sites like Youtube are pretty good at self regulation of copyrighted material, but with these laws they believe it would be impossible to monitor their content to the level the laws require.

US mirroring Chinese censorship? Don't reckon their high and mighty democracy would go in too much for that... not to mention the software companies that make millions by selling their proprietary censorship software.
