Hi all, I sold my Storm back in 2008. I am now considering buying another one and just need a little refreshing on a few things. I am on a tight budget and have been looking at a few 1999 models. If I remember they had a smaller tank than the newer ones. What were the other differences? The one I have had a look at had 70000km on it. I know they are a fairly bullet proof bike but what are the things I should be looking at with these sort of KM and above. Hopefully be back on the black stuff soon. Thanks

First check to see what mods it has, such things as manual CCTs and braided lines are a big help.
Check to see if it has the rear shock spacer! Does it have vac lines to make carb syncing easier etc etc.
The early ones have a smaller tank ,16L as opposed to 19L.
Any mods are a bonus! Does it have cans?
Make sure you ride it and that it revs freely and does not pop excessively on the over run.
If you've owned one before it will all come back to you I'm sure.
Good luck mate, and if you get it there is plenty of info on here to help you out.
Let us know how you get on, there seems to be a few Storms for sale at the mo!

With those sort of Km's I would be checking head stem bearings. Wheel bearings, Cush drive rubbers, sprockets chans, fork seals, mcct's or accts?
Things that will cost you money straight away.....saying that this bike could be perfect in condition and be owned by enthusiast.

Check that the front fairing frame has not torn out of the front of the headstock , which indicates that it has been in an accident. If there is any cracks or holes in the headstock , or the fairing frame has elongated bolt holes , walk away. Check wheel bearing play (especially the rear wheel) and steering head bearing and rear suspension movement. Fork leaks , engine noises , the usual wear stuff (chain , sprockets , brake discs and pads, hero knobs , edge of levers and mirrors etc) should be looked at. They are a tough motorcycle though , good luck with whatever you get!

Yeah if its a storm you want, stuborn carbs, low tech suspension, average fuel and the other well noted random issues with the bike.mines a 03 over 100k original cct, carbs, suspension, done the valve shims @ 90k for its first time.its no show pony lives outside and up under the bottom tripple is daggy, rear lower susp link got a bit tight, the original battery just failed.i personaly wouldn't buy a storm with to many mods, some don't work, some make them worse, road worthy in mind the polution gear has to be on.i think a good original bike more than a low km or a ready modded.grab a few ebay spares, pegs, case covers, pegs and ride.easy.goodluck.

And for what its worth,i think the early version have nicer looking gauges, and the couple of liters of fuel difference is not a big deal, pit stops, splash n dash and good throttle contol, roll on not snap open works wonders.all up if it dosent have pitting on the fork uppers, runs without smoke and hasent sat long enough for seals to harden, any thing else is mostly cheap n easy fix.
