Hi all..Question about the vtr's reg/rec. I have read about the problems with it and in most posts people say that the problem is that the Honda regulator doesn't have fins to help it keep cool. Had a quick look at my 04 and it seems to have the fins. Has the previous owner swapped it out or is this a standard Honda unit ?Attachments:

The '01 onwards update had that newer finned unit. Does that mean it will be less prone to cause trouble ?

stick with the finned type mate. its a known weakness point on the earlier models and was sorted out in the later models.

I would be very surprised if any of the original units still exist , surely they have all burned out by now . The finned ones in the later models fixed any problems with them , Ive never heard of a later one having any issues. Interesting how this story of bad reg/recs keeps on keeping on.

Graham, I have only just swapped mine out and it wasnt because it had failed, only becaise of all the talk about it failing....What I did notice though was the previous owner had put a massive heat sink made of alloy under neath it so maybe this had saved it...who knows

I just replaced the original one on the project VTR I'm building at the moment. I just whacked a $35 one from China on it. So far it seems to work. On my old VTR, I just stuck an old Yamaha LC350 one on. It was working fine when I sold it, it had been for years. A guy I know, one of the Honda MPE tech trainers, told me that they were only designed for a 20A load, but often they would have 60A going through them. So it is no wonder they had heat issues. It is simple ohms law, VxA=W, more W's = more heat.
