So now that the colder weather is here who has been getting out and enjoying the roads? I haven't been out for so long as my dads not well but am keen to get out soon for a ride.
Share your rides and what you have been up to.

Sorting the storm out, got braided line on the rear (thanks OP), and 15/42 sprockets. Tommorow I'll be getting a used S1000RR radial master cylinder for the front and braided front lines shortly after. Also got MCCTs and a seat cowl on the way. Might do that HID conversion soon too.
It just amazes me that in its 16 year life, no previous owner has done what I consider essential mods to make the darn thing stop and handle correctly. First time I rode it I was like "whoa okay... this needs some work done to be properly rideable"
haha

What calipers are you using with this set up? I feel the same about these mods. Just gives much better feel and confidence when braking. Let's us know how it all goes

I'm looking forward to the school holidays so I can ride to work sometimes. Less traffic and I don't have to take the kids to school yay. I might be able to bed my new brakes in.

Last week did a couple of rides .
Had a couple of close calls with the coppers.
They seem to be everywhere at the mo.
Got a lecture from a copper the other week about speed.
Was well up it going over the Barrengary mountain after Kangaroo Valley.
Other than that not much except synced the carbs after shimming a couple of valves on the front head and waiting for the rain to stop so I can ride again.
Hopefully this Sunday according to the weather reports.

I've also started to feel that the brakes are not strong enough. Rather than install new callipers, couldn't it be improved by putting on softer pads?

Huh that's interesting, I don't know enough about them and always thought they were just for looks!

They are more rigid than the rubber lines so don't expand out as much when they have high pressure in them under braking. Which in turn can feel less spongy.
But first before you spend any money get the basics right. A flush and bleed with good quality fluid and some good quality brake pads (Galfer, EBC sintered etc) make all the difference.
How many of you guys bleed your calipers properly when you bleed your brake system? My theory is this - Most people are only bleeding between the master cylinder and bleed nipple. The fluid sitting behind the pistons isn't getting flushed and that is what needs changing the most!
I came to this conclusion when I was fitting my new rotors and pads the other weekend. My mechanic had replaced the fluid with Mobil 1 Dot 5.1 early this year. I have done less than 1000k's since then. There was a bit of improvement but nothing to write home about. The new fluid is a dark blue color. I had to retract the pistons to make room for my new pads and rotors so I did it by fitting my bleed kit and cracking the bleed nipples while I pushed the pistons back in. What came out was a disgusting orange rusty colour. Now my front brake lever is the firmest I have seen on a VTR. As soon as you start to pull it in it goes solid. There is no initial freeplay and no sponginess at all. Also John I don't think that braided lines will make any difference to fading. IMHO that's all to do with the pads and fluid.

Thanks for the detail - this is really helpful. I've never removed my calipers or bled them, only ever doing the 'normal' bleed operation between cylinder and nipple. Are these the two pads you would recommend: ebc.wpengine.com/product/double-h-superbike-pads/or the FD-G1370 on Galfer: www.galferusa.com/brake-pads-street-sport-racing-motorcycles/I will definitely look into bleeding the caliper section of the line - my brakes seem to be getting worse every time I take out the bike and I suspect aside from really cheap pads the previous owner put on, i need to bleed that part of the system!

What's been happening.... Bugger all
Fork lowers are at the powder coaters, so just waiting on a phone call there. Have all new seals and bushings ready to go. Springs are here.
Been reading up on putting the lot back together and with regards to spring and spacer length. Seems the more I read the more confusing it is. Following the one guide seems miss out important steps and makes it sound simpler than what it really is. So have read quite a few different guides and will take bits from each to hopefully get it right!
