Have noticed a horrible squeak that seems to be coming from the rear shock or linkages ... Has anyone else experienced this and what if anything have they done to fix it and maybe it's time for an upgrade in the shocky area ...any ideas please Terry

Spray some lube in the link arm bearings first and see if it goes away. I would try and pinpoint the source. Unless you want to throw money around. If you use degreaser and pressure washers to clean you bike, you could have washed all the grease out of the needle rollers.

You will need to remove the rear linkage and then grease the linkage bearing shafts as these seize and this is what can happen

Ok an update to my squeaky rear end ... I searched through all the posts I could on this and got a lot of very helpful info so jumped right into this morning. Jacked the bike up using my car jack under the sump and supported the rear with a solid alum bar on both sides of the bike just in front of the rear foot pegs. Had the usual problem with removing the bolt that hits the left header so removed it but the other bolts came out fairly easy. Removed the shocky and linkages and found the problem, half the needle rollers in the bush that joins to the swing arm had desinagrated and the bush was frozen Purchasing replacement ones this week, I was amazed how easy it all was thanks again to the posts other vtr riders have placed Thanks guys Terry

The only bearing that is special is the carrier bearing. The seals and the wheel bearings are just a standard. Which you can get off the shelf from a good bearing supplier. If you look on the seals there are three numbers, these numbers are the size of the seal. Easy job.

Hey ken Yes thanks mate I have fixed the situation with new bearings in the linkages and rear wheel ... Had some awesome drama's with two of the linkage bearings it was so stuck in I had to take it to work and make special punches to get it out but all worked out good and learnt a lot. I have had the shock and linkages out and in several times and am an expert now I placed a 10mm spacer on top of the shocky and cranked the preset to 5, wound in the front spring preset and it's like riding a new bike ... Finding it difficult to understand why we have run it from new and have only adjusted it now ... Well that's because I have only come across oz firestorm recently Thanks to you guys for all for your help and information, what a great site

Hey BB. Good to hear you sorted out your issues. I have only recently done the forks and between this site a UK site and a US site there's plenty of info on these bikes. I am certainly no expert but while I was having my forks "adventure" I learnt a bit about setting static sag. So I guess what I'm saying is winding in the preload needs / should be done while measuring for static sag. Then once that is right, adjust the rebound. And if you already knew all that I'll just shut up. I haven't gone down the spacer under the rear shock as I lowered mine up front 5mm and that has made a noticeable difference in corners. I gotta say, my bike handles a hell of a lot more sure footed now with heavier springs and adjusted suspension.

At the wreckers, early CBR900 swinger for the brace and also calliper bracket.
I can post pics if you like and our sister sites in the States and U.K have lots of info!
It is a very rewarding mod!
