As the warmer weather approaches night rides are beckoning.
After reading so much about how shithouse headlight upgrades are I am thinking of some discreet driving lights of the LED type.
Anyone on here have any experience with this?
I have seen heaps of cree type lights on the net but would prefer to go with a set up that is tried and true.

I've also found the VTR headlight woeful. Tried a more expensive H4 bulb and that made a difference. Also tried an LED H4 bulb from "Pro Vision" www.hidlighting.com.au/led-headlight-conversion-kits.html# but the fan on the back of the bulb made the whole unit too long. Stuck them in the work car instead. So I'm interested to hear about any lights you try. I've got 20ks of bush to ride through to get from town to home and the kangaroos can be quite hard to see with the present arrangement. Are you thinking of two small driving lights mounted low on the fairing?

I'm thinking something around 50- 75mm preferably round.
The problem that I have is I want range and spread at the same time.
Researching the net at the moment and have a few options so far.
I would of thought that someone has done this before.
This is not a pressing thing but I would like some better lighting, my problems here are foxes and wombats!

I found that the trouble with "Spotties" is that it gets horribly dark when you go back to low beam....... Cree make most of the LEDs on the market including a lot of the name brand ones, I think that the ebay ones look okay and seem to be priced pretty well. I have a mate who rides a DR650 kitted out with all the mod cons and Cree lights. he's happy with them.... I'd probably get some if I rode at night, but I'm not allowed out after dark....

It's easier to ask for forgiveness rather than permission anyway

Night time is for drinking. My bikes wouldn't even have headlights if I had my way!

I got caught out the other night and even with the upgraded globe it was still pretty ordinary. I think it might be more to do with the lens and reflector and the spread it throws out.

I recently put a HID headlight in the firestorm... pulled the headlight housing out, gave the seal a blast with a heat gun, pulled the glass cover off, installed HID unit, made sure the lock ring was tight and used a bit of loctite to keep it that way, then re sealed the glass on the front and wired everything up. Hard wired the light to the battery and installed a relay switched with the switch wire from the small light above the headlight, but was a bit of buggering around. Installed a kil switch just near the speedo on the dash so the light doesn't unnecessarily load the battery when I'm trying to start it on cold mornings, and had to play with the headlight connection too because the HID unit needs hi and lo on for high beam. If you've wired anything up before it's not too hard to figure out. If I can figure out how to upload photos I'll get some up. It looks awesome, the bike looks like a cyclops, and the light is BRIGHT. I actually enjoy riding at night now

Have you found the HID light creates a very broad beam and is almost scattered by the lens. I found it very bright but the focus of the beam was all out almost rendering unusable at night

Mate it could be better compared to a modern bike but to the stock storm, it's a world of difference. I should have taken before and after pics, but the throw of light onto the ground in front of me on Lo beam is much better, there's no massive black spot right in front of the bike and the spread is better while still maintaining brightness, and hi beam just illuminates everything.
The only problem I've found is when cornering at night the light is obviously fixed to the front of the bike so it rotates as you lean, moving the light on the road a fair bit. But you get used to that pretty quickly. I'll look at upgrading the battery soon and possibly fixing some auxiliary lights to either the front fairing near the headlight or the front forks. Being that they're not usd forks there's a bit of space down the bottom for attachment... will have a look around and see what I can come up with.

Anyone have any pics of driving lights mounted?
I have bought some LED lights and am looking for ideas on how to mount them.
Prefer to have a bracket for strength.
I have tested the lights and they are "strong "
I did a hid upgrade years ago but put it back to standard as the reflector wasn't up to the task.
I can live with the difference between standard and led when dipping headlight .
Any ideas welcomed !

Thanks for that, I have been caught out by cheap Chinese crap before.
Still looking at ways to mount them.

Thanks Erno,
Had thought of the screen however not sure how it would look from behind the screen.
I am thinking of some sort of bracket affair .
