Long time no post .... I'm really enjoying riding my VTR lately as I'm using to to go to/from uni a few times a week. Great for cutting through traffic and parking. Anyway the only key I've got for it has disappeared into a black hole. Turned the house upside down trying to find the damn thing but no joy so it looks like I'll have to get a new one. I've read a few threads on here about it and I was hoping there'd be some newer information ... ? If worst comes to worst, could I simply get a replacement kit (eg, www.ebay.com.au/itm/Lockset-Lock-Set-Ignition-Gas-Cap-Tail-Keys-HONDA-VTR1000F-2001-2005-/271255572043?hash=item3f28178e4b:g:0sEAAOxy0QtSBbTV) and fit an early model ignition ECU, one that doesn't have the HISS gear in it? Edit - Sorry, wrong forum as well.

Thanks. I'm going to call Honda today to see what they say. Failing that, I'll keep trying different locksmiths until I find the right one. One of the problems is that the steering lock is on, so it'll be bloody difficult to move, they have to come to me.

Have you checked the seat unlock? I did that once - only 1 key and couldn't find the bastard anywhere. Then bingo the light came on. Some how I completely forgot I took the seat off!

No, not in the seat.
Got this message from a mate of mine, it could come in very handy.
"Gday mate,
HISS is typically looking for 9V on a pink wire to the ECU - which you can fake with a 9V signal generator to test it, then bypass it completely with a Zener diode off a 12V source... Should work up to and including your year model.
My blackbird cost me about 50c to bypass. Then you can use whatever key and lock you like. Fireblade was the same."

If this works should go into archives ,very handy to know, and a hell of alot cheaper...lol

Wow! That's a new bike. Please let us know if the bypass works and how to do it as I have had a lot of people with the same problem and have paid out the money or bought a new lock set etc.....
Hope it works for you

billzilla I imagine a relay direct from the battery, fused, then a 9V zener diode in series with the relay's switch cable, spliced onto the pink wire to simulate the 9V supply that HISS is looking for... Having never done this, I'm not sure what the result will be but am very keen to find out. If anyone can see anything wrong with the practicality of what I've just written, sing out, as I feel it may not be as simple as this...

I ended up weighting up all the options and decided to take the one where I spend a bit of money (~$600) to get it going again with certainty. I've ordered a spare ECU that comes with two blank keys. I'll fit the ECU then get a mobile locksmith to come around and cut them for me, for my existing lock. I did give the pink-wire-9v option serious thought but I decided not to, to make sure I don't make things worse. So I guess I'll have a running bike again by the end of the coming week. Thanks for the suggestions anyway blokes.

Update - The new (old) ECU and two blank keys arrived, then last Wednesday I got a mobile locksmith to come around and cut them for me. He initially cut a non-chipped blank key to make sure he had the bumps & ridges correct (there's a series of codes that Honda use, I now know mine). That key turned nicely in all the locks so he then cut the first chipped key. ... and it didn't want to go in the ignition properly! Bugger! He examined the chipped keys closely and thought that a couple of the tiny longitudinal ridges weren't exactly in the same place as the non-chipped key, so he asked if he could take the under-seat lock back to the workshop to have a closer look and hopefully carefully file the chipped keys so they'd slot in nicely. He came back in the afternoon and we gave it a go. Crank, crank, crank .... nothing. Fark! He'd done everything right, so I was happy with that and let him go. ($220) I did a big search on Youtube trying to find a video of what the red HISS light on the instrument panel does when you turn the key and start the bike - As it turns out those videos are a bit difficult to find. I eventually found one (I was going to ask here in a post) and found that with a HISS key the red light comes on for about a second or so then goes out. That's what my new chipped keys did, the non-chipped key had the HISS light stay on so I figured it was likely just a matter of keep on cranking until it started. And it did, but it took a bit more cranking. PHEW!! Such a relief, and I've got my beautiful bike back, I'm so happy now.

Great news mate, you must be happy after all of that. Did you try to bypass the HISS at all

No, I decided that I'd done enough damage.
