Just curious, has anyone done one of these iron butt rides on a storm. And if so how'd it go? I have never really heard of them before until now. I have a mate that is keen to do one in the future, trying to talk me into it, 1600k in 24hrs is a fair old stint in the saddle - I would have to do a lot of building up to the challenge, and then the K's per tank...... would have to really look into servo locations. I'm kinda intrigued by the challenge of doing it on a bike, but kinda not looking forward to a sore arse if i did part take - hence the name saddle sore I guess. So if anyone has some/any insight, would be glad to hear cheers

I have done more than a few 900K days on the VTR.
To be fair my bike has rear sets and adjustable bars as well as suspension upgrades and is tailored to be comfortable for me.
One big tip I can give you is to get a throttle palm rest!
These are great for relieving arm pump and cramps on long trips .
I have one under the seat of my bike at all times, they are easy to fit and are easy to use.

Thanks heaps for the tip kenmoore, had a quick look and am sure to get the throttle palm rest - they look well worth the small investment for longer rides. I reckon I'll also look into driving lights if I was going to attempt. I'll start me search here to see what others have with their storms.

You'll need ten tanks of fuel to make that distance! A mate of mine rode the Oxley a bunch of times in a day, whacked a fair few kms on. I don't see the point in these iron butt rides if you're just going to sit on the motorway. I could get up at sparrowfart and ride from Sydney to Brisbane and back, that'd be close to 1600kms and there's plenty of fuel on the way. Boring as farkthough. You want to make a good route of it. I've thought about this extensively - if you start in Sydney you can do legendary old pacific highway, the excellent and way under rated wisemans ferry road, take sackville ferry and bull ridge road out to the heroic putty road, take that north up the ten mile, which is one of the best roads in the state, all the way to broke. Boring bit from here to the pacific highway on the coast near Newcastle, and then take the bucketts way and thunderbolts way full of massive sweepers with a 100k speed limit and head up to walcha. Obviously from here you'll go east again, but you'll be on the famous Oxley highway which has just been neutered down to an 80 speed limit, but all the 15,20 and 25k hairpins aren't manageable going too much quicker than that anyway. Plus there's not too many places for cops to hide in the fun bits.
Once you get to port macquarie, you can turn around and do all that in reverse. You'd be very hard pressed getting home before the sun goes down though.
When I've got a day off next year I might give that a crack and see how far I get.....
Palm rest a must. Fuel bladder essential if you're no good at planning. Camel back critical - those long rides where you just keep pushing to the next servo often mean you don't stop enough or drink enough. Throw two or three litres of water on your back and you'll be drinking as fast as you can to reduce the weight. Works a treat :-)
