Hi, new to forum just bought a cheap high mileage vtr 1000 in WA. I'm from tassie and after attending my daughter's wedding in April I'm riding vtr back to tassie via nullabour. Im wondering if anyone knows for sure I'll make distances to fuel stops as I believe bike can be a bit thirsty. Any avice on this and anything else to be aware of please? Regards, Dave.

Pretty hard to guess as mods, tune, rider and run make a dramatic difference. 16 or 19 litre tank? about 150 and 210 range respectively erring on the side of caution? I've had over 300 but that was central queensland straightaways and a silly mod that strangled the poor thing Gas up, Zero your trip, go play, gas up on return. Some guys reportedly carry gas and just ride til it runs out to find their range...I'm not into sucking bottoms so I just pass everything except servos Google servo intervals across the nasty bits? Almost guarantee a teeny tanked harleys done that trip By the by I've never managed to fit 19 litres into my 19 litre tanked 04 even starting with dry bowls nor has anyone else that I have seen or read... The anything else part... Firestorms are getting on now with the early ones now 20 years old. Cam chain tensioners and rubber bits- fuel petcok, carb breathers, radiator hoses and so on are now getting past their use by date. Go manual cam chain tensioners! especially if you don't like pushing your bike far The guidelines to perform these maintenance tasks are on here and well practiced and vetted by many VTR1000f owners before you. Plenty youtubes too

Thanks Swampy good advice. Bike is 1999 so small tank. I'll do more research on distance between stops etc. When I get to WA I'll have to rebuild forks as my son says they're leaking so while at it I'll checkout tensioners and either mod or replace with solids. Also I've heard that rec regs can pack up so will look into that as well. Bike has clocked over 100,000km so hopefully issues have been dealt with in the past. My son tells me it runs and rides really well so I'm looking foward to seeing up close what I've bought.(btw we are both mechanics) Cheers for now Dave.

I have a cpu fan constantly on my 04 one but it is the less unreliable later version. Cheap ebay chink ones are cheap for a reason. it not the hassle of relacing them when theu go it;s the wiring, battery etc that gets taken out with them. There is a mod to lock up the stock CCT's but manual's are simple, relativly cheap and easily available...some good ones Made in Oz too, I'll send a link if I find them. Check out the fork pages here, mine are budget played with to the instructions. 95kg springs, spacers, heavier and more oil. Simple cheap stuff that makes an appreciable difference. If you are planning head decarb or what ever, get the head gaskets or parts etc first, apparently gaskets are getting hard to find. I had an awful job finding a thermostat recently that I wish I'd not now and just put an electric pump in as other have already done. Hey, and take it easy for the next 100000 or so til the bikes run in.

Hey Swampy, thanks again for your helpful info. I'll look into aftermarket tensioners, probably quicker than mods seeing as I'll have limited time in WA with the wedding and family stuff, my son and I will have to wait till the women plan a shopping trip( and they will) to get work done on bike Haahaa. I'll just take it as it comes and we'll get it sorted. Cheers Dave.

I have been across the Nullarbor more times than I care to remember and I would recommend taking fuel with you, definitely
