Hi. Heading off on a weekend ride with some mates around the snowy mountains next weekend so decided to change the air filter, plugs, oil etc. Just took the cover off the air filter and discovered a K&N filter. Should have checked this before I bought a genuine Honda job. So I’m a bit confused now. Is this a good filter or should I install the Honda one? The book says that there should be two sub filters over pipes that go into the side of the carby assemblies. There are none in my air box. I live on a dusty dirt road. Should I fit these ? Also there was a slight amount of what looked like engin oil in the bottom of the air box. Is this normal? Thanks, Clay

Hi again. Have just noticed that there are two strips of foam inside the air intake on the air box lid. These disintegrated as soon as I touched them. Turned to powder. Should I just clean them out or are they important? What are they for? Thanks again, Clay

The sub filters are important, they keep dust out of the carb emulsion tubes.
You can make up some new ones out of air filter foam that you can get from most bike or aquarium shops and just cut it to size or order 2 new ones from Honda.
As far as the K& N filter goes they need to be serviced . You can buy a kit at most automotive shops.
I have a modded bike and still run the original Honda filter with the Burnie Morgan mod done.
The bikes are easier to tune with the standard filter.

Thanks Kenmore. Will sort it tomorrow. Hope the lack of filters hasn't caused any premature wear. Can't imagine why the previous owner would take them out. Really looking forward to this ride. Haven't been to Bucken before but the roads sound great. Clay.

The Snowy is a great ride.
Keep an eye out for rubber necking tourists that want the whole road.

It was a great ride. A bit of atrician along the way - started with 10 bikes and ended with 6 but great roads and company. Had to do one variation because of fires.

Yep. One bike written off - rider OK One bike disabled by excellent BMW electronics - thought bike was being stolen. One rider spewing guts up all night and next day - dropped out and stayed in bed in hotel. One rider forgot he had to pick up his mum further down the coast - rode off quickly.
Two trailers to the rescue. Most eventful ride I've ever been on. Glad there was beer each night.

Well I ended up second in the pack. A much younger, 22, guy on a fire blade was given the lead. At this time of his life he just wants to go as fast as possible. Understandable. So would I if I had no fear. I could catch up to him as soon as the turns got tight but he'd leave me as the road opened up. That has made me pull my finger out with regard to the 5mm shim. I'm finding that I really have to shift my weight around on the VTR to get it to corner quickly. The fire blade seemed to manage this with much less input although on tight high speed corners the same bump that would cause me a slight jump would unsettle the blade a lot more. I decided on that ride that I'd like to do a few more track days as that's where I learnt the most last time. I was looking at the track up near Goulburn. They advertise track days but I've heard mixed reports about the actual track. Might give it a go anyway as it's the closest one.

Wakefield Park is O.K and a lot more $ friendly than Eastern Creek.
Also seems to be a different more laid back crowd that gets there.
The track is the best place to hone your skills, not the road.
