Hello fellow Firestorm riders....bought my matte black '05 VTR new in '06 and have loved it ever since except it chews up batteries!!! Replaced the original yuasa with the same brand/type/size in '12 and added a trickle charger to keep it fired up. Worked well for awhile but let me down on a ride down the coast last year. Decided to change to a SSB Powersport lithium which I hooked up to the trickle charger...lasted a month and then the battery was cactus (my bad... should have checked if trickle charger was compatible!!!) Lesson learned so bought a new SSP Powersport battery disconnected the trickle charger and all was great for 2 weeks....rode it around South coast second weekend...no probs; rode it to Wollongong for service and again no probs....went to go for a ride today and battery was as flat as a tack!!!!I'm thinking this is more than a battery issue so would like some advice from the forum before hubby gets home and goes off his nut again. He will want me to get rid of her but I love her!!!

Welcome along. Illawarra hey? I’m in the Gong and there are a few more here too. The early Storms are known to have regulator rectifier issues but yours is the later model so it should be okay. It would still pay to check the voltage output anyway. If it’s not being ridden regularly, you really should get the correct trickle charger for it and the battery should last for years. I ride my bikes all the time so they don’t have any issues (well that’s my reasoning anyway). Don’t let hubby make you sell it, you’ll regret it if you do.

Thanx for replying.....I'd like to ride more regularly but house and kids are a bit more important. Have spoken to my mechanic who recommends going back to the old Yuasa battery and trickle charger and to bring the bike back in again so he can check out the problem.

Hehehe my kids are grown up and doing their own thing, so my time is all mine! Good luck with it. What colour is your Storm so I can keep an eye out for you?

It's the R/R, the later model ones are just as rubbish as the earlier ones, get it changed out for a mosfet R/R off a later model R1. It's a simple mod your mechanic can do, if you search VTR.org or Superhawk Forum there are lots of threads on how to do it. I've been running a SSB powersport lithium battery for the last 3 years and it has been great until a 12 month old later model R/R shit itself recently. The SSB was so good that even after not starting the bike for a month it was fine and full of charge. I also run them in my other bikes. BTW I grew up in Wollongong just to keep it local.

matte black with "hotbodies" undertail, Staintune hi rise pipes, silver screen, silver hugger, oxford heated grips, gear indicator, and rear seat cowl. Good luck spotting me though...owned her 13 years and only done 27000k's which includes a lap of Tassie, a lap of nsw inland and a trip to the supers!!! I have seen quite few threads regarding the crappy regulator/rectifier but thought is was an early model failure...new battery this week and new trickle charger so that it will get me to my mechanics place and I'll mention the R/R issue as a starting point. Thanx guys for the help and feedback. Cheers.
