Second Night Shift after Leave......Not quite as tough as last night.... a killer....slept all day yesterday though....The Day before I came back off leave I finally got a chance to get the covers off the bike. Up the East coast to Swansea then turn left onto Lake Leak Highway. I rode this once before, years ago but my missus was on the back and my front tyre was pretty stuffed. It was ten times better than I remembered......just rolled from one side to the other for mile after mile. Then I should have refuelled at Campbelltown, but didn't. Then turned towards Cressy and on towards the Central Plateau on a rather rough narrow stretch. Then, as you get closer to the plateau it just looms above you....the road becomes far better. A good surface plenty of twists and turns with a few smooth and wide hairpins thrown in. Eventually opening up into more medium to sweeping turns for miles.... and miles, as my fuel began to dwindle....... . I had to try to conserve fuel while trying to get to Miena before 5pm when it was likely that the servo/store closed. Arrived at 5.05 to find that it closed at 3.00. went to the pub to enquire about locals with fuel and the lovely Tara behind the bar had a jerry can full for just such an occasion. Shaking from the cold as I refuelled, (not intending to come this way I only had a flanny under my summer jacket) one of the hotel patrons handed me a polar fleece, saying, keep it... hubby will get another one from work......The final 160km home was pretty tame, after dark....kangaroos etc. Final tally.....550kms, 71/2 hrs will I do it again? ? YOU BET....already planning the fuel stops.. Earlier start so I can take the long way home, probably in summer though... after the West Coast trip. Meanwhile I'll just relive the last one on these late nights....Maybe i should get all the local stormers out of the closet... C'mon guys, check out the map below and we'll do it soon.... tinyurl.com/3unnsjo

Jealous as mate...I seriously miss the run up through the highlands/cradle mountain/ lake leake/just about everywhere in tassie. Just dont miss the cold, quite happy to be able to wear shorts and a polo every day....
Glad you enjoyed Lake Leake, not a bad stretch is it, just got to watch out for the fine upstanding local policeman who likes to hide behind a clump of trees about 3 k's from the East Coast end. Although last time I saw him, well he spotted me first, he motioned for us to slow it down just a little bit and gave the thumbs up.
Your example of the locals hospitality further reinforces why I recommend all motorcyclists visit Tassie at least once. A great many OZFS'ers can already vouch for that.

There's not many Councils that declare themselves Motorcycle Friendly, so We are pretty lucky there with Spring Bay Municipality up the East Coast. .

First night shift for a while .... had 2 rotations off for my Walcha trip .... and its the second last one for almost a month. Got told the other day that I will go to any length to get out of night shifts lol .. was chemo last year .. and this time its my reconstruction surgery ... I go into hospital next Thursday for surgery on the Friday. Anything up to a week in hospital and 3 weeks off work. All that is bearable but the killer is up to 8 weeks off the bike . I guess you may be seeing more of me on the boards for a while

Thanks guys And Adam its sure does ... being confined to the couch for a week at a time last year made me appreciate being mobile and able to do stuff. I have big plans for this time off .. I have books to read and movies to watch. My lappy is making the visit to hospital with me to keep me in touch with the real world as well I hope that your healing process is starting well

Next time Stormy hits the road he'll be pretty shiny eh??? Probably needs a break after the miles you've been running up lately. Good luck and take care.

Stormy shining is on the list once I get out of hosp .. .have to keep the muscles moving for sure .... thinking of getting a couple of things done to him while Im off the road providing the budget permits. And he loves the long trips we do .... was fairly purring on the Walcha trip .... does altitude and colder weather help the Storms or is it just my imagination ?

Bike engines LOVE cold weather...not so much altitude but the storm is pretty gutsy anyway, and the altitudes in Oz are next to bugger all. Although i do remember reading an article about collaberation between Marlborough Yamaha and Marlborough Holder Dealer Team (Brock & co), where the tin top boys were astounded that the "bikies" were tuning for optimum performance across the top of the mountain (Bathurst). The tin tops had never considered altitude before. Cold, dense air when heated expands further producing more grunt... whereas hot air has already done some of its expansion. Cold rainy days are probably the best for the engine, but not so good for the rider. "Volumetric efficiency" is a term that applies I believe.
