Hey Bezman, even with different jockeys we are getting vastly different mileage figures from essentially the same configurations.
As far as I am concerned mine is abysimal, i commute to work between two country towns around 30 klicks each way, sit on around 120-130 most of the way, a few overtaking manouvres and no real hard running... 160-180 ks on 98 octane sees the reserve light flashing. Now as far as I know mine has jet kit, open stock pipes, some midrange cam grind (so the seller informed me), is in good order valve and comp wise, but sucks fuel like a turbo rotary.. and I want it better.
if it was making the power per pound of fuel for the useage I wouldn't be surprised... but am surprised at how uneconomical the setup is.
having said that it is the ONLY thing about my VTR I don't like, the rest is fun as fun can be....

A couple things to note when comparing Mileage. An actual L/100km figure will be a fairer comparison. I think that the 'Orange Light of Doom' comes on at different times/levels on each bike.
When I got mine, it had Stock Jets, K & N filter and debaffled pipes. That gave me 10L/100kms. Now with Jet Kit, Stock Filter, Equal Length velocity stacks and a custom exhaust I can get it as good as 7L/100kms. Seat of the pants says it is more powerful.
Personally I don't see the benefit of 98 over 95 performance wise and with the current set up mine uses more of the expensive stuff.

ok 13 litres per 180 klicks =13.8 k per litre pretty well average it seems then.......
I run 98 oct as it gives a longer more consistant burn as a rule, and i find it gives less low revs pre-ignition on large singles and in this case twins.
I have a modified YZ250WR that is tuned for higher octane and runs better, cooler and gets better mileage, same as my modded V6 Rodeo, 10% at least better mileage and a nicer feel to response.
I have a fairly good understanding of mechanicals, and am trying to isolate the causes of the higher mileage of mine, I made some inserts to speed the gas speed up in the stock exhausts, and the result was better mileage and smoother idle, however the power and torque were noticeably hobbled so removed them. Just really gotta find some spare time to pull the carbs off and have a looksee at the current jetting and fuel metering. However I am interested in the tuned length stacks as a way of increasing venturi signal.......

VTR's are low compression and run the same on any fuel. I used to alternate for better cleaning additives in prem fuels but got same mileage from all tanks

I have a 2000 model, jetted, aftermarket filter and an advance kit fitted. Have also put the highlift stainless pipes on and I get an average of 150k's to a tank. I also sit around the 6-7k rev range so it's to be expected I suppose ;D My mates often shake their heads when we go for a ride as I'm often looking for fuel

But I dont see them complaining when they get off and have a stretch/smoke/whatever when I am stopping for fuel

Since the Hwy Patrol incident i have been the very picture of Mr law-abiding bike rider, I have not ventured past 100kph, no overtaking quickly, just riding like I would drive my car. result 230 km to 14.8 litres of premium, all I have done is put some good plugs in it, manual tensioners, new OEM air cleaner and I change oil (turbo diesel fleet oil) every 4k... amazing thing that right wrist

Just curious, First time Stormer, first decent ride yesterday..98, so the smaller of the tanks. The fuel light blinked on and off at 120km, then came on solid within a k or two, thought bloody hell allready!, but only took just over 6 litres to fill?? Does the light give you a first warning and then go off before coming on again, or once its on its on, wasnt game to test it out yesterday..

My old girl was a 98 (small tank, light never worked)
The best was 253km till bone dry. (Hwy riding at my best behavior)
Worst 156km then walking again. (Riding how I enjoyed it on the Kangaroo Valley ride a few years ago)
100km difference - Same configuration, Same rider, different riding attitude.

I generally can get 230kms out of a tank , mixed riding (commuting and having a go) before she is out of fuel. The light comes on now at about 180 , I bent the float wire inside the tank when I had it out to repaint the tank. It used to come on at 160 , and annoyed the hell out of me Graham

My 04 model (bigger tank) goes about 180km before the fuel light starts flashing riding to and from work in town. The best I have got is about 260km being fairly well behaved on the highway, I didn't run dry but I went pretty close. If I have any fun on it whatsoever though I'd better start looking for a servo pretty quick because as well as making an incredible sound and accelerating like a lunatic it drinks the fuel faster that a thirsty 150kg German at Oktoberfest.

Personally I couldn't care less what something will get 'to the tank', just so long as it is around the 250km mark. 250km is a good distance/time to stretch the old legs and really is a fair distance to do in one hit.
What I care about is actual fuel usage... as measure in litres per 100km or whatever. Well said cheekybugger!
My bike got 13L for a 236km trip recently, which works out almost right on 5.5L/100km - for those not in the know that is actually fairly decent fuel economy for a bike. My old CBR1000F got 6.3L/100km over the same run and in similar conditions, for example, and my XR600R gets about 4.8L/100km! The XR600R also has a 23 litre tank, making it my extreme adventure bike and long-distance 'one-hitter' weapon of choice.
Now, those 236km for 13 litres are with my bike running on BP Ultimate 98 octane, fitted with Yoshimura slip-ons and doing mostly highway running at 110~120km/h. If it makes any difference I'm 6'2"/95kg and generally ride with a medium-sized backpack. I suggest if you are getting terrible actual fuel usage then you might want to consider the state of tune your machine is in and even get a dyno run in - you might be way off the mark and could benefit by getting better economy and a few more hp as well.
Anywho thats just my 2c on it.
Cheers - boingk

Funny you should mention the licence, pete, I lost mine February last year for a few months on the XR600R! Way to work, late, bad morning etc. Still have it and would recommend it to anyone - its even learner legal (not sure how though with ~50hp/140kg wet).
If you do end up with an XR600R (and make sure its that XR600R) then get the Stage One camshaft for it, a Unifilter big plenum intake filter and an aftermarket ignition that specifies advanced timing - I got mine for $30 from eBay. Best $300 you could spend on a bike, totally transforms it and in no way affects reliability.
Cheers - boingk

10L PER K thats not to good unless its getting a fair hammering. Mine, 99mdl, will do 180 to fuel light then by the time i get to a servo generally makes about 200ks and only takes 14l to fill. Im not sure though on how much of the remaining 2l is usable. Saying that if I give her a hiding (Granya) I make sure im only about 160k from a servo as I have seen the light come on at 150 after a fair thrashing.

Have since found out that my speedo is was way out and I have put in a speedo rectifier, at least it was keeping me under the speed limit. I found out that the faster I went the more the speedo was put out so now I'm getting much better mileage Cheers #surprise#

Fueled up this morning with 273 k,s on the tripmeter and all i could get in it was 16.4l not bad as some of that was two up,that works out at 16.6km/l , the dyno tune has paid for itself.

Anything in the rules regarding average speed? All i have to do Steve is ride like normal to qualify , and some single wheel activity may well be included.

We're just gonna go for a normal ride Steve. JD's calculations mean that from a 19 litre tank he will get 315kms. I dont believe that a storm can do that well , ridden normally , they tend to chew the juice pretty well. I said lets go for a blat somewhere , and we'll take a container of fuel with us and see how far it will actually go before it runs out. I dont expect to go up and down Mac pass 20 times as fast as possible , or drone down the highway at 100 for 3 hours either. Will be an interesting exercise.

I dont think you could get 300 out of a 19 litre tank on one of these , Ive cruised at 100k for a full tank out on the road and I was showing empty at 240
