The old girl has been neglected due to a visitor in the form of a sick 848 to the man cave. Now it's sorted some parts have built up for the Storm and it's time to get on with it. I have a new chain and sprockets as well as some new Cush drive rubbers. When I first got the bike it had a vibration at about 4,000 revs so I checked out the drive line and found that the chain had a tight spot. It has niggled me ever since I found it and while I am at it I have a new set of hoops to go an as well. Also like the idea of white wheels like I had on my 906 Paso(Some people called it the Pusso!) that I bought new way back in 92. So I will be taking my time and will post pics as I go. Might even paint the forks black while I am at it. Wheels are off and waiting to have the tyres removed so that they can be painted. Stay tuned!

Wheels are all masked up, rubbed back , etch primed and ready to start painting. I am going to leave the hubs and spokes black. Hope it looks O.K, if not will spray completely white. Intend to take my time on this, no big hurry as I have other bikes to ride!

Sure to give some of the Ducatisti the shits, but then again apparently I'm an expert at that. Man cave is full at the moment! The Tuono on the lift is about to get the royal treatment!

Well, after many hassles with painting my wheels I am almost there. Prepped wheels as per many previous times but the paint kept frying up. Finally gave up and went back to the beginning and started all over again. Changed brand of paint and undercoat and it looks like all will be well. The Storm has never been off the road for so long but I want it right. This is what was happening. I sanded sooo much that I reckon I could rob a bank now as I have no finger prints left! This is where I am at now, took ages to get to this, but I think the original primer I used was not compatible with the paint. Going really slow with lots of light coats.

Back wheel all primed and ready for paint tomorrow.
So far no probs with paint.
Front wheel has second coat and waiting for final tomorrow.
Looks like it was the primer that caused the problem.
Hope to finish them off and get the tyres on next week some time.

Wheels are progressing so now I am painting my fork lowers! Also put some mesh over the headlight, it may be overkill but I will see how it looks on the bike! If it's too much it will come off! Lots going on!!

Hey KM, I have some of that typical corrosion on the fork lowers and am thinking about giving them a refresh - not a polish but perhaps a satin black paint coat or powder coat, is sanding with a fine grain sandpaper the go? And if so, what grade/s do you recommend?

Mate I worked up from 800 to 1800 from memory. Remember the better the prep the better the finish. Satin black does look nice. Attachments:

yeah thats right. to get them totally smooth you need to use the higher grades....a little more work but it depends on the look your after.

Well, finally the front wheel is all painted and sanded ready for the clear coat. Pretty happy with the outcome so far, a few very , very slight imperfections that the clear should mask. Now to sand the back wheel and clear coat them on Friday.

Not planning to at this stage, but who knows what could happen.
I think the black and white wheels will be busy enough.
We'll see.

Got up really early this morning as this whole thing is really pissing me off. Gave the wheels a final once over and fook me if the back wheel had a couple of spots where the paint was really thin. I re painted back wheel, finished of forks and cleared the front and it looks really good. Will prep the rear wheel in 2 days time. The forks turned out really good and as I still wanted the rough look I was wondering If I should clear them as well? Have to work this weekend, but hopefully the Storm will be back on the road next weekend. Any thoughts on clearing the forks? I can paint at night as my Man Cave is heated!

Good Job so far! Clear coat might help protect them from chips and stuff. The previous owner painted mine about 2 years ago and they have held up really well. The type of base coat he used though is metallic I think so it still looks a bit "rough"

Have decided to clear coat the forks for longevity.
Don't know what to do with the clear on the wheels though, the front is really shinny and neat.Haven't done the rear yet.
Do I wet sand with 2000 and then buff, or should I just leave them?
Any advice appreciated.

Well, what a bloody production, the black and white wheels look shithouse! Even with the white to black edges tidied up it just looked pooncey. So this is where I am at now! White centres with polished lips. Am painting centres tonight and hopefully that's it. No effing finger prints left from all the rubbing!

Well, it's taken 2 nights to strip the wheels and semi polish the lips.
Had today off but went to my cousins funeral!
Very sad, only 3 months older than me and quite unexpected.
Am giving the front wheel it's final coat tonight and will mask up and undercoat rear ready to paint tomorrow night.
Hope to get the tyres on early next week all being well.
Will give the edges a final polish when wheels are back on bike.
This is the longest the Storm has been off the road except for my insanity and over spend when I was in QLD!
What an experience, would of been easier to get them powder coated but at least I have learn't some things and hopefully will enjoy some satisfaction when it's all back together.
Can't wait to ride it!!!

The saga continues. This is where I am at now. Not too much longer I hope. Just need to feather the paint where it joins the polished lip on the front wheel and paint and finish off the back then fit tyres etc. Forks are back in as you can see. I lost a bit of motivation when my cousin passed away but am back on track now.

Good stuff mate. That will look a lot better. Sorry to hear about your cousin. The best therapy for that is to get your storm finished and ride it!
