They make good projects, parts are still easily sourced and not too expensive as long as the crank is OK. I found Road and Race in Gosford and Bevelheaven in the US very good for parts.

funny you should mention gosford colin, that was my home town up until 7 years ago and i have a long history with road and race.phil hitchcok, the owner of road and race has supplied me with a good amount of parts and advice on my ducati's and other bikes over the years.i used to be involved in post classic racing with him around 20 years ago. i miss riding up and down the old road between gosford and berowra, also galston gorge and the wisemans ferry run.as for the parts for duke project they are no problem,i have an ss900 motor in the shed +the original gts motor.the non desmo heads have been rebuilt, just got to decide which gearbox to use,the original external selector gearbox or the ss900 gearbox -greeny

I used to live down that way too, there are some top roads for riding on.
I put some desmo heads on my 900gts. I also bought a competition clutch, malossi velocity stacks and some brand new 40mm delorto's from bevelheaven. The new carbs were just as cheap as buying second hand ones from around here.
I loved the bike, but due to loosing a car I needed the bike for daily transport. I had never intended the GTS for this, it was done up like an ss and the clip ons were a bit uncomfortable in traffic. The bike didn't like wet weather either. So it had a brief holiday on ebay, and I bought a VTR. I would like to get another as I like the bike, and doing them up if fun.

GSX 250 82 GPz 1100 B1 (always wanted one) 85 DR 600 first model 90 VF 750 Sabre 84 mdl 93 VFR 750 86 mdl 99 VFR 800 98 mdl 06 Z400 72 mdl (son crashed it and sold it for scrap)* 06 VFR 800 01 mdl* * denotes still have. I nearly bought a VTR 1000 instead of my 98 VFR but I wanted to do long distance touring and the small tank put me off. (I regret it )

Ridding from Wagga to Port Stephens and back every weekend for 10 weeks was enough to cure my touring desires.

this looks like fun. just in case anyone is interested i thought i'd add my short list of bikes.
1). Kwaka GP 250. my learner bike. i came off this bike more than any other so it taught me alot about the pitfalls of road riding. it was hell frustrating though when i was riding with some mates on 750's.
2). Honda 550 (T something???) cant quite remember this model but i used it as a commuter between the central coast and the city. it was an enduro style bike and was set up for a side car (not that i used it as such). this one taught me the importance of bike maintenance as i seized the engine up on the hwy due to lack of oil.
3). Yamaha XJ 900 '88 model. the maroon one with the black tear drop on the tank. i bought this one to tour tassy and she was lovely bike. shaft driven and bomb proof. more importantly me proof. i did alot of k's on this bike and she never let me down. for some reason i cant remember why i sold it or when or to whom.
4). Triumph 900s '94 model. She was british racing green with duel round headlights. a triple cylinder engine that was so smooth to ride. i owned her in '98 so she ranks as my most modern bike. i sold her to put a deposit together for a house six months after i bought it for a $3k loss. that hurt!
5). Honda CBX750 '89 model. This silver peice of shit served me as a commuter for six months between Newport and the city. The motor was fine, it was the steering bearing that was stuffed. as soon as both hands came off the handle bars she would shake and shudder and no amount of attention from the mechanic would fix it. i didnt find this out until after i handed over my hard earned. was riding down the road and let go the bars to do up my jacket. boy was i spewing about that. it did teach me to be alot more thorough when buying second hand.
6). Yamaha FJ1200 '88. This black beauty is my current ride. she only had 70 000km's on the clock i'm told but i suspect it may have rolled. not too sure. i've had to do abit of work like clean the fuel lines and carbs because of the rust in the tank which i've cleaned and resealed. chains sprockets tyres now fork springs and seals. she's been good and will be for a while longer but there has been enough going on for me to really want a modern/ new bike.
7). Honda VTR 1000. this has been a dream since i bought the triumph actually. i test rode a brand new one in '98 and loved it. it was just out of my price range back then but now i am determined to own one by june 2008.
