Hi vstormer , I'm from moree northern NSW. Picked up my storm last week from my local bike shop. Apparently, she's sat forgotten in the corner for quite a while after the original owner traded it on a bloody Harley ! Anyway, I got it for $3200 , 12 months rego, new tyres, fully serviced and tuned and detailed. I'm stoked !

Hi all, I sit here quite excited as am about to pickup my new Matte Black '05 with 40K on the clock plus staintunes. Deffinately a step up from my ZZR 250 which suffered a SMIDSY accident a couple of months ago. I'll check the rest of the forum out, but does this model suffer CCT problems as well or was it fixed by then? Cheers, Dave Matte black and stainies.....Mmmmmm! So how are you finding it after a few days of ownership? Well it's been a couple of months now and I absolutely love it. I can't see a reason to ever want to part with this amazing bike. It is so comfy and relaxed when cruising but stupid fast if pushed. There's a couple of corners on my way to work that I can take easily at 80 without pushing hard. My ZZR 250 could barely do 60 around them. I do wish we could do 130-140 on the highway though, it'd cruise all day at that speed.

However if you are only ever buzzing around the roads you should strongly consider going up 2 teeth on your rear sprocket. I also went down 1 on the front, so I am running 15/43. It's snatchy but otherwise sensible for road riding and means that you can actually be in 4th gear doing 60kmh if you want to ;-)

Macca, that must have insane acceleration in 1st and 2nd. I generally sit in 3rd at 3k at 60kph.Iv'e found that 3,4,5n6=60, 70, 80 and 90kph at 3k. That said, I don't usually use 6th unless I'm 100+ or cruising down hill. Are there any real benefits to the shorter gearing or is it just personal preference?

It's just more spritely I guess. I really like the huge torque and would probably struggle to go back to the 16t front sprocket now. It does indeed accelerate pretty quick and when I nail it as I enter the freeway sometimes it feels hard to hold on and I slide right back into the seat. Actually it's a bit mental. I've scared myself a few times...

Hey everyone, just found this page and thought id join, had my storm just under 12 months now. I have an issue with my left hand rear indicator as of yesterday, it is no longer flashing and the front left is flashing fast, the right side is flashing at normal rate, does anyone know what it might be? Additionally I had a new set of indicators sitting here and have also tried those to no avail. Any suggestions would be welcomed. Regards Steve

Hi Steve Welcome to the forum. The rear indicator, is it on at all or no light at all? Usually is a globe goes in a car that side front or rear will flash at a faster rate.
If it's a solid light it might mean your flasher relay has a problem

Like vtrstormer says, if one is out the remaining one can flash faster. If your new indicators do the same thing, sounds like an O/C for the rear on that side. I think a multi meter is going to be your best friend here. Good Luck, let the guys know what the outcome is!

Hi Ads here, newby to the site and VTR's. I have a 2007 VTR1000F with Yoshi pipes, got the bike for a song but have no history with it, looking for what to look for and common problems. Bike has been treated a little rough and been dropped at very low speeds (judging from the damage)so she looks a little rough.

Hi Ads, welcome to our little forum.
Things to do first up 1. Rectifier/regulator located on the right hand side under the rear seat fairing. Has been known to fry your wiring and kill batteries 2. Swap out the auto cam chain tensioner to manual ones as the little Spring can break and munches your motor These are the main first up things that should be done to save you spending heaps of money on repairs
With these done you can enjoy your bike. The rest will be up to you and what you want to do

Hi all, I'm a newbie to OZ Fire Storm. Just bought a Yellow 2000 VTR1000. My 2nd Honda in over 30 years of riding. The forum is a great place to find other riders of the same bikes, I look forward to reading posts & contributing where possible. BTW "bumblebee" is the yellow transformer with no voice. Since my VTR is yellow and a bee landed on it the day I bought it Bumblebee seemed appropriate. Cheers

Welcome bumblebee. I am a relative newbie myself, you will find this site a great resource for anything you need to know good bad or otherwise and basically how easy the bad is to fix for anyone with a little mechanical skill. I have had my VTR Firestorm about 2 months now and it was badly maintained, but now is brilliant and getting the way I want it with hardly any outlay of money, just time and patience and some home made bits and bobs. Nice one raymoz. This winter I've spent some time vinyl wrapping my lapis blue bike to matte black, next step is to apply some custom graphics i'm designing. Love the look of matte black!

Hey mate and welcome to the forum. Great buy mate looks like a later model than a 98-99? Or are you chasing parts for another bike?

Hey mate and welcome to the forum. Great buy mate looks like a later model than a 98-99? Or are you chasing parts for another bike? Haha, good call man - compliance plate shows date of manufacture as 07/04!! So it seems I have a much newer bike than the previous owner was aware! So I'm going to need all the servicable parts I guess as it's been parked for donkeys - filters, seals, chain, (replacement front indicator lenses due to a cracked one), etc etc. What oz-based supplier(s) do you guys rely on mostly for parts? thanks, Adam

Welcome, ozbeefer!
I've used the australian wemoto store a few times for aftermarket parts. For OEM stuff I just go to Peter Steven's because they are usually the same price but a bit quicker to get stock or already have stock. There are a few good pages on the forum that describe 'must do' mods. I'd suggest you start with the cheapest and easiest and work you way down the list until you're either out of money or happy with where the bike is at. In hindsight for me the the best mods are: 1. 6mm rear spacer - costs next to nothing and makes the bike turn in faster 2. Extra 2 teeth on the rear sprocket (and a speedohealer if you have the coin) - let's you get out of third gear on the roads. Go down one tooth on the front as well if you want bucket loads of torque (I have) but be aware of how snatchy it is to ride slowly and over bumps :-) 3. Quality sintered brake pads - I used Brembo's and they made a huge difference to the stopping power on my bike 4. Linear springs matched to your weight. The stock springs are waaay too soft. I used racetech springs and they are great. Make sure you get quality fork oil (I used Motul 7.5wt from memory and very happy with it) 5. Aftermarket pipes, air filter, jetting etc. but only if you're game and want to stuff around with the carbs a lot (I had no choice as my bike came with it all, but I ain't complaining!). I treat the pipes as a big safety feature - I'm so loud I turn heads everywhere I ride 6. TPS sensor mod. This surprisingly made a really big difference to how smoothly my bike idles. I don't know how/why but getting the resistance as close to 480ohm as you can (or thereabouts) seems to help some bikes, but does nothing to others(?)
From a maintenance perspective there's a few common things to address: 1. Check your heatsink. It's under your seat on the RH side I believe - you want a ribbed one that distributes the heat correctly, I think all 01+ models have it as standard(?) but earlier ones have been known to melt down 2. CCTs. These have been known to fail on Storms', destroying the engine at the same time. Get some manual CCTs on it and never worry about it again 3. Change all fluids in the bike, including the fork oil! The bike is pretty much bullet proof but good maintenance will keep it running for as long as you own it
Finally, buy yourself a copy of the Haynes service manual. It's way better than the OEM service manual and has loads of pictures. I am a complete mechanical n00b and I've managed to everything I've wanted to do on the bike with the manual, this forum and the right tools (really just a couple of torque wrenches, bits and of course a bike stand). If I can do this anyone can!
This bike is such an undervalued beast. You will love it!

Thanks macca, some great stuff there! Just ordered a bunch of stuff for the initial major service to get her running again, oil + filter, brake fluid, new battery and rectifier/regulator (as the previous owner had mentioned battery issues in the past), brake fluid, fork seals + good quality oil, plugs etc! But I will definitely look at that DiD chain and sprocket kit everyone's talking about - needs a new chain anyway Will definitely grab the Haynes manual, that seems like a very smart thing to do! thanks

Keep an eye out on eBay, I got one for pretty cheap, they retail for around $50... Very useful, I refer to it all the time.
I haven't needed chain and sprockets yet, but probably due in a while... id recommend you ride the bike a bit before you decide to go changing the teeth around - Ive got stock chain and sprockets and went to eastern creek the other day for a little fang, and I'd have hated changing gears more than was already necessary. It'll rip your shoulders out of their sockets with stock gearing and I find the front wheel light enough already, I'd be bloody terrified adding teeth to the rear... Food for thought anyway
Welcome aboard, a lot of very knowledgable and helpful folk here, have a read through the mods thread as generally anything you can think of that you want to do to the storm has already been done and documented by someone here.
