Hi all....as from my previous noobie post i had said i wanted to start a build thread...so here it is...
I was visiting my brother in law one day when i stumbled across a bike that his mate had dropped a few months earlier, sitting in his shed...after a brief chat i was told he was interested in selling it.....so i decided that this was what i was after...
$2000 later it was mine.. 2007 model, 1 owner, 33,000Kms and cosmetically ruined...
What it looked like the day i decided to buy it...
After removing the broken plastics.....some nut and bolts and a whole lot of grass and dirt i was soon to realize that yes...it was damaged but had some serious street fighter potential.
at this point i also realized that i some serious decision making ahead and needed to start straight away..
I was lucky enough to have a spare seat cowl thrown in by the previous owner saving me some $$$ in which i needed to spend on a sub frame..
im almost positive this one is beyond repair?
so after some Ebay searching i managed to win one out of the USA for just under $200 $AUD delivered (pics will be posted once recieved)
The next thing i decided to do was give the girl a wash to really evaluate the extent of the damage. i also removed the headers and belly pan.
In trying to save money...i was offered a yoshi and considered the chop into a single....but after some more ebay/net searching i decided to leave the headers be and run the twins as Honda intended.
after having very little $$ left from the initial outlay i decided to hit the forums for cheap/free mods to do until next payday....
i stumbled across the shock spacer mod i'd heard so much of.....so i whipped up a couple of sizes (thanks to my bro inlaw) i ended up with a 5mm and a 10mm. With the idea of having a savage kick up in the tail i went straight for the 10mm but was quick to relize it was never going to fit with the std saddle bolt. With the intentions of doing SOMETHING to it...i fitted the 5mm spacer.
i will eventually fit the 10mm when i look into a longer saddle bolt (i think by the pic these are welded into place in the shock saddle?) Will nut this one out later...no hurry for this.
After sitting staring at the front end trying to decide on a headlight and gauge setup...i had quite a job in front of me tidying up the wiring...first thing first i needed to find a wiring diagram....and
again thanks to my bro inlaw..... he managed to download one and a full service manual too
as you can see there is some serious soldering and heat shrinking to be done in order to fit the headlight i want...annnnnnd depending on the headlight as to how far i need to go with the tidying up
Next thing to do was to drain the coolant and remove the radiators..
After a bit of reading i decided to re use the R/H radiator...That was until i removed the standard thermo fan
apart from being bent (which was not noticeable with the fan on) it had some major fin damage where the fan sat...i think i could have gotten away with re using this, but decided not to and am now looking into alternatives.. (any recommendations would be appreciated)
Next thing was to drain the oil to remove the oil cooler....so i did
After a hit with steel wool it came up a treat, i could easily polish or paint it.
and after a trip to Bunnings and $2.88 later i had the aluminum required for a new cooler mount (currently making as we speak)
on a totally un related subject i had decided that i wanted an undertail that was as clean as possible to show the 180 rear and also free from indicators and number plate...it was then i decided to mount the plate "Harley style" and after quick mock up i was happy with the look.....Now all i have to do is make/purchase a bracket.
The next few things i want to do i need the subframe to do them, so progress has slowed until the subframe is in my hands. I want to try and relocate the ignition into the seat unit somewhere..... so i do not want to start on tidying the wiring until this is done. once ignition is moved i can then plan gauge and headlight setup..Im going to run 45deg risers and straight drag bars again.....need ignition moved in order to chop ignition mount off and drill holes for risers.
No for the fun part....With no ideas yet set in concrete, im looking for some feedback/ideas on EVERYTHING from radiator setup to possible paint scheme colours...below are my ideas to compare/comment on.
Matt black in colour possibly with a single racing stripe?
gloss black wheels
chrome drag bars, res covers, levers and silver/chrome braided lines
carbon front fender
carbon chain guard
PWR front mount radiator with chrome or black grille/cover
polished rear sets with black pegs
polished swingarm
carbon stick on engine protectors
twin black headlight setup
black frame sliders
F and R wave rotors
chrome bar ends
1 bar end mirror
black engine/frame etc bolt kits
knuckle duster fuel cap
twin 12" carbon fibre stubbie exhausts...maybe high rise?
Acewell gauge
seat pod to cover pillion seat
remove pillion pegs/hangers
ummmm and thats about all i can think of..
im near finished the relocation of the oil cooler so will continue thread and add some pics once that is finished....
remember......FEEDBACK PLEASE !!!
